How To Install And Configure Multisite On Wordpress?

Do you want to set up a multisite on WordPress? Wordpress has a built-in function that allows you to create multiple sites with one installation and database. In this article, I will show you how to install and configure a WordPress multi-user network.

How to install and configure multisite on WordPress

What Is A Multisite?

Multisite (multi-user network) WordPress allows you to run and manage multiple sites from a single WordPress installation.
You can create and manage sites using the same username and password. You can even allow other users to register and create blogs on your domain.

Multisite Benefits

In many situations, having a multisite is much easier and more beneficial than managing multiple standalone WordPress sites. Here are some of the benefits of using WordPress:
As a network administrator, you can easily manage multiple sites from one panel.
Each network site can have its own administrator who can only manage his own site.
You can install and activate plugins, themes for several sites from a single download.
The multisite also has a simplified update management system. You can update WordPress versions, plugins or themes on all sites at once.

Multisite Disadvantages

There are times when managing multiple offline sites is much better than having a multisite. Here are some of the disadvantages you should always keep in mind:
All sites on the network share resources. This means that if the site does not work, then all the sub-sites also do not function.
Managing server resources, especially in the event of a surge in traffic, is definitely more difficult, so if you are a beginner, it will be difficult for you.
If your site is hacked, then all other sub-sites are hacked.
Some WordPress plugins may not work correctly in a multisite.

Who Needs A Wordpress Multisite?

Even if you have multiple WordPress sites, this does not mean that you need to enable multisite mode.
There are third-party tools, such as ManageWP or InfiniteWP, which allow you to manage multiple sites from one panel.
Here are some cases when a multisite is really necessary and profitable:
A magazine site with various sections, managed by different people.
Business site with sub-sites for different locations and branches.
Government or non-profit websites for different departments, locations, and regions.
A network of blogs running on multiple subdomains.
School and college sites that allow their students to create their own blogs on school servers.

Multisite Requirements

All WordPress multisite sub-sites use the same server resources. This means that you must choose a very good hosting.
If you plan to have a couple of sites with little traffic, then the possibilities of shared hosting are quite enough.
However, for the multisite to work correctly, especially as it develops and grows, a virtual dedicated server (VPS server) should be preferred.
I recommend paying attention to Sweb, as It offers both shared hosting and dedicated servers. In addition, he is one of the official hosting partners of WordPress. Also great are SiteGround and InMotionHosting.
In addition to good web hosting, you will need basic knowledge of  installing WordPress and editing files via FTP.

Domain Structure Selection

In a WordPress multisite, you can add new sites using either subdomains or subdirectories.
http : // site1 . example . com
http : // example . com / site1 /
If you decide to use subdomains, then you will have to configure substitution subdomains on your server (I'll explain how to do this later).
And if you give preference to subdirectories or base_path, then the only thing you need to do is enable permalinks  to the root site.

Configuring Lookup Subdomains

If you decide to use subdomains for a multisite, then you will need to configure the substitution subdomains. To do this: go to the cPanel toolbar. Scroll down the page to the “Domains” section and click “Subdomains”.

Configuring lookup subdomains

Note:  cPanel control panel may look a little different for different web hosting companies. This is what the Bluehost panel looks like. You may have it a little different - do not worry.
In the subdomain field, enter the “*” sign and select your main domain from the drop-down menu.

Subdomain Creation

Cpanel will automatically detect the document and display it in the box below. Click the Create button to add a substitution subdomain.
