The Value of Content Before Website Design

Website Designer

I firmly believe that I am preparing the content of the site before graphic design begins and this applies to both websites and blogs. Some of them will argue with me, but I will fight in this battle and dig into because I know that content before designing a website is the right approach.

I believe:

Strong website design extends colors, fonts and layout boxes in the past.
Strong design focuses on the user.
The website design should be designed around the user, which needs, and the desired result of a visit to the website. It should focus on the user's challenges and the ability of the website to resolve these issues.
It would not be focused on coding trends and pre-packaged templates.

Design Trends Come and Go, But Focus on the User

I will receive emails from people discussing their website design requirements and these lists will focus on specific project criteria such as unlimited scroll, hamburger menus, warrior images, video and motion backgrounds.
People rarely go to a design firm and present data based on their visitors, user needs, and final website goals.
Website owners are very impressed with design trends, their competitors' websites, and their modern design features. In doing so, they will lose the actual web visitor.
People often choose a website template or blog theme and take part in the graphic presentation or bells and whistles it offers. It is emotional leadership that takes the desire to help actual website visitors.
When they buy the stock theme, they apply their material to match the subject blocks of the template available. Or even worse, they put in place a custom design to adhere to the same style and presentation of a top competitor's website.
In most cases this is disappointing and disappointing.
This is because this process follows a purchasing, design, development, and finally material. That path is in the wrong order. The process is going backwards and is frustrating.

First Subject Guides Determine Design Decisions about Education

Your desired user flow, visitor paths, and call for actions are usually documented after the graphic design has been completed. Unfortunately, this is a wrong approach because it requires you to match content to the theme or design of the website. It should be just the opposite.
Before you fall in love with a competitor's website, a WordPress template is trying to be you, or going to a graphic designer, you must consider goals and objectives for your websites or blog.
You need your user personalities, their individual challenges, to offer documented solutions, and the paths you would like to take these visitors within the website.
While graphic design is very important, it must happen at the right time within the project to allow you to show the website, the content and the best possible offer.

One of my best quotes on this topic is:

“The material is destined for design. The design is not designed in the absence of material, it is a decoration. ”-
The messages and content of the building blocks and the origin of the website are. This means that they should be carefully considered and well documented before considering any colors, fonts and layouts.
The design elements should complement, highlight and show the key messages and content.

Focus on the Right Content

While I am saying that you should have written material before you start designing, I am not saying that you have to write all the material. It would be difficult to achieve a difficult task for most website owners and businesses.
I encourage clients to focus on core departments and web pages. During the sales process, I usually go through their website and look at areas that I think would benefit from custom design templates. These will change based on client, industry and target demography.
Here are some common areas that can benefit from the first content strategy:

Home

  • Main page about or about the company page
  • Main services and individual service pages
  • Main shop front and individual product pages
  • Section resources, categories, and / or resource items

Personas

  • Landing page templates
  • Main blog posts and individual blog posts

Contact page

Sometimes I only recommend a few custom design templates and other times I suggest fifteen to twenty. It really depends on the complexity of the subject matter and the variations in the flow of material and call actions.
